The dangers of purchasing medication without a prescription online
By Staff Writer
The abuse of prescription drugs, such as painkillers and sedatives, by individuals these medications are not meant for, is an increasing problem, according to the Mayo Clinic. Continued use may lead to harmful health effects, such as addiction.
Recently released research, by The Partnership at Drugfree.org and the White House Intellectual Property Health and Safety Forum, showed that illegal online drug sellers have provided thirty-six million people with medication without a valid prescription.
This news has led several major online commerce companies to take steps to prevent further illegal online activity. Among the businesses that have joined together to create a nonprofit organization targeting these drug sellers include American Express, Google and Yahoo!.
Both physical and online state-licensed pharmacies only sell FDA-approved medication that requires a prescription. However, rogue internet drug sellers pose as legitimate websites and sell medicine without a prescription. This dangerous practice allows anyone with internet access the ability to obtain drugs that may be fake, substandard or unapproved.
Individuals who feel they have grown dependent on prescription medication may want to seek substance abuse help from a drug rehab facility.
