Online film shows devastating effects of teen eating disorders
By Staff Writer
A nonprofit organization called Normal in Schools (NIS) that is dedicated to educating students about eating disorders (EDs), self-esteem and wellness recently launched an online educational film to coincide with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which takes place from February 20 to 26.
The documentary-style movie brings attention to the growing problem of EDs and obesity in American society. It also discredits certain myths, examines treatment options and stresses the importance of better training for medical professionals who encounter patients who have the condition.
An expert from the University of California-Berkeley, said that at least one in every four teen girls suffer from an ED, severe depression or thoughts of self-harm.
The film cites the deaths of three award-winning students who were derailed by EDs. In doing so, the project also sheds light on the inadequate healthcare treatments that failed to save these teens' lives.
Adolescents who have low self-esteem or negative perceptions of their bodies may benefit from the research-based treatment options that are provided by troubled teen programs.
