Medical experts discuss problems with mental health treatment for kids

A new report reveals several major setbacks in the medical approach to pediatric mental health disorders.

The findings are based on analyses from a group of experts, including psychiatrists, educators, parents, social scientists and bioethicists. The gathering of professionals was the culmination of a series of five workshops held by The Hastings Center and funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

Most of the experts agreed that many American children exhibit dysfunctional moods and behaviors that are not adequately treated by medical professionals. However, they also admitted that there are some cases when normal levels of aggression or anxiety are treated with medication due to an overreaction by parents.

The authors stated that the main objective should be to help children who are suffering from abnormal, and potentially harmful, moods and behaviors. Although many Americans believe it is wrong to diagnose children with an emotional disorder and prescribe them medication, these individuals should be aware of the long-term effects of untreated mental problems.

Adolescents who suffer from depression or other psychological issues may benefit from the support that is offered by many wilderness therapy programs.
