Returning to school can increase bed wetting for some children
By Staff Writer
Experts in the field of child psychiatry recently stated that the stress of going back to school can cause some kids to wet their bed.
Due to the potential changes in their sleep patterns and daily routines when entering the school year, children may experience physical and emotional stress. A pediatric urologist based out of Maryland said that the brain dictates bladder control, so a child that is consumed by external factors is more apt to wet his or her bed.
The doctor stated that changes in the child's lifestyle - through support from parents - can eliminate approximately 80 percent of back-to-school bed wetting cases. She said that parents should stop their child's fluid intake three hours before bedtime, and make sure that their son or daughter empties their bladder before sleep.
According to ChildDevelopmentInfo.com, bed-wetting children can become embarrassed and may suffer from low self-esteem. Enuresis can also cause children to avoid social behavior, especially activities that require sleeping out of their home.
