Protein shortage in brain may explain why men are more likely to develop autism

A new study reveals brain activity that may explain why males have a higher incidence of autism that female subjects.
The report, which was conducted by researchers from George Washington University (GWU), concludes that a protein called aromatase, which is regulated by the gene RORA, is reduced in the brains of autistic individuals. Previous studies had indicated that RORA levels - which are critical to the development of the cerebellum - were lower in autistic patients compared to those who did not have the developmental disorder, but offered no explanation behind the irregularities.
The most recent discovery is important because aromatase is responsible for converting testosterone to estrogen. Thus, a reduction in this protein creates a build up of male hormones, which decreases RORA expression.
The GWU team of experts suggested that women's estrogen receptors can help make up for the shortage in RORA, which likely explains why more males are diagnosed with autism.
