Officials prepare to spread positive vibe during Mental Health Month
By Staff Writer
A national organization is gearing up to raise awareness and educate Americans about the services that are available to mentally ill individuals.
Mental Health America (MHA), a community-based network, recently revealed the details of its campaign, to be launched in May, which is Mental Health Month. The group said that its theme this year is "Do More for 1 in 4," which represents the 25 percent of American adults who live with a treatable mental health disorder.
Officials with MHA are concerned that too many Americans are unaware of the medical services that are readily available. In addition, the organization hopes to dispel the stigma that some people associate with mental health conditions.
The group also said that it will spread information about the federal Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act, which was passed in 2008. The law requires that insurance policies that cover mental health and substance abuse treatment must be on par with the coverage for other physical ailments.
Adolescents who struggle with emotional issues or addiction problems may benefit from a summer boot camp.
