Majority of American adults believe that violent video games negatively impact society
By Staff Writer
Nearly seven out of 10 American adults are concerned about the level of violence seen in many video games, according to a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.
The report also found that 54 percent of respondents believe that violent video games lead to more violence in society, according to MyFoxNY.com. Approximately 65 percent of adults believe that states should be allowed to prohibit the rental and sale of violent games to minors, and 71 percent said that parents have the primary responsibility of limiting their children's exposure to violent images.
The poll reveals that a majority of adults favor government intervention when it comes to graphic content on radio and television. Roughly 55 percent of respondents said that they support the Federal Communication Commission's regulation of sex, violence and profanity on the airwaves.
According to WebMD.com, most experts agree that children of any age should not be exposed to an excessive amount of violent images. Around-the-clock media exposure and the emergence of new video game technologies can bombard a youth who is not properly monitored by a parent or guardian.
Overexposure of violence can lead children to feel fearful and may cause negative behavior changes, according to the medical source.
