Inner city youth may experience emotional and behavioral problems

A number of communities on the West Coast of the U.S. are experiencing issues involving inner city youth and the tendency for them not to have access to quality education and health sources.

A recent editorial from The Huffington Post demonstrated how many inner city youth who experience emotional and behavioral problems do not have access to quality services that could help them cope with their situations. There have been several studies comparing inner city youth to those who live in the suburbs, contrasting the environments to which both populations are exposed.

To help combat these views, there are now alternative programs for inner city youth that focus on academic performance, but also integrate emotional and behavioral support.

These new programs create a structured environment where students are able to explore their individuality in a controlled setting where their emotional and behavioral needs are met. Parental involvement is also encouraged, helping them build a stronger bond and showcase the benefits of having an active parent in a child's life.
