ASD cases rise in Norway due to more thorough clinical evaluations
By Staff Writer
A recent Norwegian study indicates that the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) among children is significantly higher than in past decades because of advancements in medical care and clinical testing.
The report, which is the latest part of a long-term study called the Children in Bergen project, found that the number of ASD diagnoses has increased dramatically over the last 15 years. They concluded that as much as 1 percent of the child population may have some form of autism. Previous sub-studies indicated that the rate was as low as 0.44 percent, and then it was increased to 0.87 percent in recent years.
Researchers noted that people should not be alarmed by the rise in ASD diagnoses, which includes autism, Asperger's syndrome, atypical autism and other developmental disorders with similar characteristics. The definition of autism has expanded over the past few decades, which has led to more cases throughout the world.
Communication difficulties, poor social skills, narrow focus and repetitive behavior are all signs of autistic behavior. However, many adolescents who are diagnosed with an ASD can overcome their learning and social deficiencies to perform well in school and live satisfying lives.
Teens who have developmental disorders may benefit from boarding schools, many of which provide a learning environment that helps students become more disciplined and focused.
